Creating A Family Tree

As we get older, many of us feel responsible for passing on our family’s history to our children in some way. For some, this means a full-time commitment to genealogy research to uncover where our ancestors came from and a host of other characteristics. For someone that has spent hundreds of hours trying to track down unknown ancestors, take it from me – genealogy can be either extremely frustrating or super exhilarating. But in the end, we all will end up creating a document that shows our ancestors in an organized manner. This is a called a Family Tree.

What is A Family Tree Exactly?

A Family Tree is a document (digital or physical) that shows the father’s and mother’s names (and sometimes children) of someone, and their fathers and mothers, and their fathers and mothers and so on. Each previous generation shown is commonly called a generation, and their names are usually displayed in a type of organized chart – often with their birth dates and death dates.

In its simplest form, a Family Tree can be a single page or a series of pages with written information about these people. Here are few companies that sell Family Tree posters or charts you can fill out. Notice the different designs and how people are listed. Some hold more people per page than others. As you can see from the examples above, they are meant to hold and show a lot of information. While they show a lot of information, there isn’t much room for anything but names and a few dates. For more detailed records of ancestors, dedicated genealogists often keep detailed books or entire pages devoted to each ancestor. Here are few examples of these kind of products…
